Guest : Flossie Malavialle

3 April 2009

I must admit I came to see Flossie Malavialle with some doubts and reservations as to whether I would particularly enjoy the evening as, generally speaking, French accents and singing is not quite my cup of tea.

I needn’t have worried for one moment - Flossie was absolutely wonderful! Her French/Geordie accent is quite simply charming - totally captivating. It’s when she starts to sing though, that you realise that this girl really is a cut above many singers on the folk scene. Her voice is incredibly clear and powerful, and so full of expression.

She used a PA system on this occasion, but I think she could have easily managed without it. Flossie has all the right stage patter, the amusing stories and anecdotes are all there, delivered in the aforementioned charming accent. Her repertoire is extremely varied, ranging from “Peaceful Easy Feeling” by The Eagles to Edith Piaf’s classic “Je ne Regrette Rien”. The latter song has never actually been one of my favourites, but Flossie made it sound good.

The folk scene is often associated with bearded men with one finger stuck in their ears - Flossie Malavialle is about as far from that as you could imagine, and a hell of a lot nicer looking too! If you do get the chance, go and see her - I promise you’ll have no regrets either, let alone Edith Piaf!
