| They
came from near and far to pack the room for the welcome return of
top-class guitar luthier and all-round maestro Steve Hicks. And what
a night it was ! Steve was joined on stage again by singer/guitarist
Lynn Goulbourn, and we were treated to a wide-ranging programme, including
music from all popular genres, plus a couple of instrumentals from
the classical repertoire .
Acting as a sort of Musicians Magical Assistant, Lynns
clear, true vocals and solid background guitar playing allowed Steve
the space to demonstrate the full extent of his guitar virtuosity
across all styles. Hes got a warm and expressive singing voice
too. We heard vocal solos and duets; plus Steves jaw-dropping
accompaniments and solo instrumentals. Hard to pick out favourites,
although his solo version of Tarregas Recuerdos de la
Alhambra was particularly sublime, but from early crowd -
warmers such as Shortnin Bread" and Speed
of the Sound... , through Delta Blues to evergreen standards
such as Georgia , we were entranced .
A
magical night indeed .
